Study of inorganic membranes for gas separations

Public

Two inorganic membranes were investigated for use in gas separations. The objectives were to synthesize palladium and zeolite A membranes and study their separation characteristics using pure hydrogen and nitrogen, as well as a 70% / 30% mixture of the two. It was found that the palladium membrane was effective at separating the mixture into a more than 99% pure hydrogen stream. The zeolite membrane was not effective in separating the same mixture, and the permeation followed the Knudsen diffusion.
