Heat exchanger design for use in a 5kw SOFC APU

Public

This project analyzed compact heat exchangers for use in the National Energy Technology Laboratory's 5kW Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Auxiliary Power Unit (APU). The primary objective was to design small, lightweight heat exchangers that could withstand the harsh environment of the SOFC APU. The impact of material properties and surface configurations on exchanger volume and weight were investigated. Sizing calculations for the Air Preheater centered on plate-type exchangers, while the Steam Generator and Exhaust Condenser were conceptually designed.
