A structural beam has a level of flexibility determined by its geometry and material properties. A beam in which the flexibility could be changed by a mechanism within it would be advantageous. Specifically, an ice hockey stick in which the flexibility could be varied would allow players to tailor their stick to specific situations during the game. Our objective was to research, design and create a mechanism which can be combined with a hockey stick in order to dynamically vary the flexibility. Three designs were created and working prototypes were constructed. Testing to determine the effectiveness of these mechanisms was done in a laboratory setting. The testing provided the validity of some of the designs but further work would need to be done to make a viable commercial product.
