Ankle Recovery and Metabolic Cost: An Assistive Walking Device
PublicDownloadable Content
open in viewerThe goal of our project is to decrease the metabolic rate of a recovering sprained ankle through the implementation of an assistive damping device. Numbering two million annually in the United States current market devices aim at compressing and limiting the mobility of the ankle. This is due to the RICE regimen, Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate being the main treatment of ankle sprains. The proposition of this project is to incorporate the goal of RICE in decreasing blood flow and into an active brace design. Damping force, walking velocity, and dorsiflexion angle from the prototype testing, will be used to analyse the braces successfulness. These variables were compared through a computer simulation to calculate metabolic rate of a subject with and without the device. Successful damping was found with areas to improve upon and alter for optimal use.
