Student Work

impact absorbing skate

Public

The objective of this project was to design and analyze a novel spring concept and use it to reduce the risk of both overuse and acute injuries in figure skaters. Using Suh’s Axiomatic Design Method, our team designed a mechanism that modifies the load transmitted to a spring. This concept allows greater force response customization than other absorption methods and absorbs significantly more energy than the current state-of-the-art in figure skating boot design. This design represents a step forward in preventing injuries of figure skaters who perform large jumps frequently.
