The purpose of this MQP was to determine the viability of replacing the methanolysis Unit Operations II Laboratory experiment with a similar, yet safer, ethanolysis experiment. Furthermore, the heating value and emissions profile of biodiesel from ethanolysis and methanolysis were studied and compared to petroleum-based diesel. We present experiments and calculations that investigate these topics and demonstrate the viability of modifications to the Unit Operations experiments, as well as the implications of biodiesel in the fuel market.
