Experiments on trailing edge notches for MAVs

Public

This project's goal was to determine the effects of trailing edge notches on low aspect-ratio wings at low Reynolds numbers using a wind tunnel and a purpose built force balance. Trailing edge notches may reduce the local lift coefficient at a point where previous MAV studies indicated a peak in the span-wise lift distribution. It was determined that notches can increase an airfoil's lift-to-drag ratio. Optimal notch location and size are 60% of the half-span and 1.76 of the planform area.
