Fiber optic drawing drum

Public

The purpose of this project is to develop a drawing and collection device to manufacture 0.016-inch fused fiber-optic fiber at Incom Inc. in Charlton, Mass. Incom currently outsources the production of fiber and wished to bring the operation in-house to reduce costs. Preliminary analysis identified strengths and weaknesses of present drawing and collection systems. The analysis resulted in the design and manufacture of an AC Vector powered drawing drum with compatible Vector motion controls. Drum rotation speed is imperative, correlating to the diameter of fiber being drawn. The fiber, Extra Mural Absorption (EMA), is light absorbent in nature and used in 90-inch fused fiber optic assemblies. The assemblies are essential in the manufacture of lenses for United States Military Night Vision Goggles.
