Cycling for post-stroke rehabilitation uses a stationary bicycle designed for users with equal leg strength, but could be improved if it accounted for the weakness of the user’s affected leg due to hemiparesis. This MQP develops a drivetrain for an adult tricycle to allow for rehabilitative and recreational use. The drivetrain was designed so that each crank rotates on a fixed axle at a speed relative to the size of the chainring. Each chainring is connected to separate sprockets on the rear axle with a 2:1 ratio. The drivetrain has potential to be set up so that the patient can pedal for more repetition or for strength training. Testing indicated that users can adapt to the pedaling pattern and that potential for adjustability makes the design suitable for post-stroke rehabilitation.
