Design of a z-axis mechanism

The purpose of this project is to design a cost-effective and user-friendly automated mechanism to adjust vertical distance between laser markers and their work surface. Laser marker beams have a fixed length at which a product may be effectively marked. When marking several products of varying size, the laser must be adjusted in the vertical Z-axis with respect to the product surface. While many manufacturers offer automated Z-axis marking machines, they are costly and difficult to operate and maintain. The final design of this project consists of a vertical linear rail, upon which the laser scanhead, containing optical elements, is mounted. The rail is driven by stepper motor and accompanying software, and the laser beam is directed to the moving scanhead via two turning mirrors. The construction of a working prototype allowed several design specifications to be tested.
