The sit to stand (STS) transition is essential to everyday life. However many people, especially geriatric patients, have difficulties standing independently. Although there are assistive products available, there are no devices that mimic proper posture for healthy STS, encourage stability, and increase the user’s capacity to stand without using the product. Our product serves as an exercise device that strengthens the muscles used during STS. A gear system with four links translates a user’s input force to a force that raises their body. Once the user moves upwards, torsion springs on each side of the device activate and push the user forward to stand to mimic a healthy STS transition. As the user gains strength, they will need to use the device less and subsequently regain independence.
