Referential communication in the Australian magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen

Public

This MQP investigated referential communication in the Australian magpie, Gymnorhina tibicen. Field playbacks of alarm calls were performed on the campus of the University of New England, NSW, Armidale, Australia. Two different types of alarm calls were used to examine the proposal that a call may be observed to warn about aerial predation. Results illustrated the ability of the magpie to specifically respond to recordings of the two acoustically distinctive alarm call elements.
