Design of diagnostics boom for plume experiments

Public

This project redesigned and constructed a mechanical diagnostics boom (MDB) for electric propulsion plume measurements in a vacuum chamber. The MDB consists of a motor attachment, a boom, a boom arm, and a diagnostics attachment. Through iterations based on motor attachment, a boom, a boom arm, and a diagnostics attachment. Through iterations based on finite element analysis the MDB is redesigned to fit the chamber, to retain structural integrity for required position accuracy, and to minimize flow interference. In addition preliminary design work is performed for an articulating and telescoping boom that can be placed at the end of the vacuum chamber.
