Firefighter injuries and deaths on the fireground are often associated with poor or inadequate communication. Previous studies and industry advancements have focused on improving radio technology. Information, training, and standards are lacking equally important aspects of communication; the clarity and conciseness of what is said and the concept of active listening. This study identifies and highlights this need, provides the first ever taxonomy of important "human factors", and suggests ways to incorporate human factors into fire department training and standards.
