Aggression and territorial conflict in the cichlid fish Nannacara anomala

Males of the cichlid fish Nannacara anomala perform sequential assessment of relative fighting ability during territorial conflicts. Baseline aggression of individuals in a population of male N. anomala was determined. After aggression scores were assigned, males were matched by weight in a series of pair-wise agonistic encounters. In these staged fights, fish were either similar or asymmetrical in aggression score. Videotape analysis was performed to determine effects of inherent aggression and aggression asymmetry on fight length, escalation and outcome.
