The goal of this project was to explore the cause of fracture branching, specifically if speed of fracture has an effect on branching. With Professor Larsen and Professor Smith, we developed Python code based on the phase-field model of dynamic fracture, with the ability to translate the crack for a specified period of the running time at a specified speed. Using this code, experiments were performed at varying speeds to study the effect of speed on fracture branching.
