Design of multi-element & custom student airfoils for WPI's discovery classroom

Public

This two-part project developed teaching aides for subsonic aerodynamics courses taught in the Discovery Classroom at WPI. First an airfoil with a remotely operable trailing edge flap system was designed, manufactured, and tested. Results were compared to the predictions of MULTFOIL, an inviscid vortex panel method code. A CAD/CAM procedure was developed allowing students in an introductory aerodynamics course to design and manufacture custom airfoils on a three-axis CNC milling machine.
