Characterization of diatoms in Gremillon Creek, Lorraine, France -- establishing an effective protocol

Public

Diatoms reliably infer the ecological conditions of damp environments. The laboratory of CNRS-ENSIC-INPL of Nancy, France used diatoms as bio-indicators to determine, quantitatively, the health of the local Gremillon Creek (Lorraine). The progress of the government's rehabilitation efforts will be monitored using the Indice Biologique Diatomique. This project produced a comprehensive protocol for collecting, preserving, and preparing the frustule of the diatoms as well as generated a database of images from both light and scanning electron microscopy.
