The Synthesis of 2-(4-bipehenylyl)-1,4-benzoquinone for use in energy transfer studies

Public

Biochromophores contain two aromatic groups bonded together through a bridge system consisting of saturated chains or rings over which energy transfer can be monitored. The triplet state of terphenyl has an extinction coefficient of 90,000, therefore, it would be a good chromophore for these studies. In this project, 2-(4-bipehenylyl)-1,4-benzoquinone was synthesized as a terphenyl precursor. We decided to make this molecule by coupling 2,5-dimethoxyiodobenzene and 4-biphenylboronic acid; demethylating the ether group; and oxidizing the diol.
