Effects of drilling and processing JSC Mars-1

A study was conducted at the NASA Johnson Space Center to better understand several processes involved with in-situ sample analysis on a mission to Mars. These processes included freezing, heating, crushing, drilling and sample analysis techniques. A series of experiments were designed to recreate these processes on Earth. During these experiments, the main objectives to be studied were contamination of the sample, change of mineralogical composition within the sample, and the torque required to drill into a sample with different amounts of ice.
