Improving the Shipping & Receiving Process at Sjogren Industries Inc.

Public Deposited

Shipment times and supporting processes in shipping and receiving play a pivotal role in the customer satisfaction for almost all manufacturers. Following a kaizen process with lean principles, we targeted organizational and efficiency-related issues in the shipping and receiving area at Sjogren Industries. Using a PDCA approach, we developed a new floor layout to improve the shipping process flow at the facility. We introduced a bin and labeling system for the shipping and receiving area to help reduce lead time. Finally, to help inventory overproduction and supply chain issues, we created a demand forecasting system in Microsoft Access (to export to Sjogren’s current ERP system). Industrial engineering techniques such as time studies and cost-benefit analysis helped identify bottlenecks in the current shipping and receiving process through additional application of tools like value stream mapping and inventory control. Throughout the project, we identified areas of improvement for Sjogren’s shipping and receiving process and provided recommendations.
