Costa Rica currently lacks post-consumer plastic recycling, due primarily to the fact that there is no washing process in practice; thus dirt and contaminants adhered to the plastics cannot be removed and will damage processing equipment and devalue the resulting secondary plastics. This project, submitted to el Centro de Investigaciones en Contaminacion Ambiental (CICA), analyzes each phase of the recycling process and provides recommendations for the implementation of a pilot post-consumer plastics recycling program in Santa Ana, Costa Rica.
