Design of an HDPE crash cushion

Public

This project investigates energy dissipation through the deformation of High Density Polyethylene pipes using a sphere that has a diameter greater than the pipe's inside diameter. Drop tower testing is performed for different sphere and pipe configurations to interpret and analyze the energy dissipation and deformation recovery properties. The optimal configuration is used to design a reusable energy attenuator which meets NCHRP Report 350 guidelines.
