Fuel cell utilizing Nostoc sp. produced hydrogen

Public

This MQP dealt with the preliminary experiments necessary to construct a fuel cell fueled by bacterial hydrogen production. The optimal culturing conditions for the cyanobacterium Nostoc were analyzed. Growth rate for Nostoc grown with nitrate ions in the medium was determined to be 85 hours. It was determined that the nitrate ions in the medium stimulated Nostoc growth and it is theorized the Nostoc converted the nitrate ions to ammonia which in turn lowered the pH of the medium.
