Design of a valve train motoring test fixture

The goal of this project was to develop a test fixture that would analyze accelerations, velocities, and displacements of the valve train of a SOHC Chrysler 2.0L engine. The test fixture consists of an AC servo motor driving the camshaft which in turn actuates one valve. With accurate acceleration, velocity, and displacement data several dynamic characteristics may be analyzed such as the system's natural frequency; cam, spring, and rocker-arm design; and frequency/time domain vibratory characteristics of valve-train components. Multiple areas were considered while designing this machine such as drive systems, lubrication, sensor research, vibration isolation, and torque characteristics of the valve train. This project was done with support from Daimler-Chrysler. The machine will be used for future undergraduate and graduate research on valve-train dynamics.
