Host Material Evaluation of Thulium-doped Crystals at the 3H4 – 3H6 Transition

open in viewerThe purpose of this project was to obtain the absorption cross-section, emission cross-section, and fluorescence lifetime of various Thulium (Tm+) doped host crystals at the 800nm transition. Two spectrometers were used to obtain the absorption measurements, and the emission spectra was both measured and calculated. We utilized rate equations to analyze the gain coefficient. Figures of merit that were determined for each crystal are the quantum efficiency, maximum gain coefficient per total dopant concentration, the gain coefficient per unit of absorbed pump power, and the gain coefficient per unit of incident pump power. Based on this analysis and figures of merit, Tm:YLiF is recommended for future testing.
