Education Resource Development

open in viewerWhile Education has become an important talking point for many Ghanaian politicians and leaders, the government lacks the monetary resources to fully fund their school. Despite spending 3.5-8.5% of the national budget on education-related expenses The money that the school does get from the Capitation Grant often comes at irregular intervals and is not always in the full amount, and it is only 4.5 cedis per student which is around eighty cents, which is not enough to cover all the materials needed by the schools so they often have to prioritize what the most desperately need. To supplement the materials that they are unable to purchase, teachers are expected to create their own resources. The teachers at the primary school explained that this often forces teachers to think outside of the box in a way that they are not taught at teaching college. This can be especially stressful for new teachers that are moved from their families and expected to cook, clean, and maintain a house in addition to their responsibility as a teacher. The goal of this project was to design an abacus that teachers could easily create with resources readily available to the teachers.
