The Role of the extracellular matrix in bile acid-induced apoptosis

Apoptosis is the major form of cell death in cholestatic liver disease. Our studies involved working with primary culture rat hepatocytes as a model for bile acid-induced hepatocyte injury during cholestatic liver disorders. The aim of this project was to investigate the role of hepatocyte attachment to various extracellular matrices in modulating the sensitivity to bile acid-induced apoptosis. Collagen type IV and fibronectin were found to protect against bile acid-induced apoptosis in hepatocytes.
