[An in vitro fertilization study of mouse embryos.]

The goal of this study was to take the first step towards the development of an unobtrusive assay that would accurately measure embryo competency and viability. Its focus was to assess cell junction proteins in mouse embryos, due to their vital role in development. The junctional proteins investigated were E-cadherin, -catenin, ZO-1, occludin, desmocollin, and desmoplakin. Comparisons between in vivo and in vitro embryos were made. It was found that only E-cadherin and -catenin exhibited such a difference.
