Mitogenic agents of Limulus polyphemus

Public

A fungus from cultured gill leaflets of the horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, was inoculated into intact animals and isolated gill leaflets to see if these infections would enhance mitotic activity. Aceto-orcein followed with Wright's stain revealed postmitotic and possibly prophase cells, but not large numbers of cells in metaphase arrest as observed in previous studies in this laboratory. The suspect fungus grows on potato agar, or on chitin alone: it appears to be a Penicillium species.
