Government, businesses, physicians, trainers, coaches and athletes have created an environment that tolerates and even promotes doping in sports in order to achieve political, economic and cultural goals. This report takes a sociological approach to understanding the use of doping in sports and takes a closer look at the historic example of the doping scandal that occurred in the former German Democratic Republic.
