Despite the benefits of office-based laryngeal surgery, it is not yet as common as operating room procedures. Four leading otolaryngology researchers described the surgical technology they believed would allow widespread growth of in-office surgery in 2005 (Zeitels et al., 2007). A literature review of endoscope sizes and surgical image guidance showed significant advancement, but not to the degree that was predicted. By analyzing the pattern of development over the last 15 years, this paper hopes to interpret the perceptions physicians hold about office-based laryngeal surgery.
