Students deal with short-term adversities which affect their daily routines, including acute illnesses, physical injuries, and/or limitations. Although these issues are common at post-secondary institutions, the demanding curriculum at Worcester Polytechnic Institute may exacerbate the problem. The authors conducted a survey incorporating over 500 WPI students to examine the effects of such hardships on the emotional health and academic performance of the student and among their acquaintances and friends. The authors made recommendations to decrease the effects of the adversities and provided coping mechanisms for the students. In addition, the author critically assessed the survey methodology used to examine the effects of short-term adversities.
