Timing belt vibration test fixture

Public

The Gillette Company came to realize that timing belts were introducing synchronization errors into its production machinery. They wanted to have a mathematical model of these vibrations in their timing belts so they could predict their effects. The goal of this project is the creation of a test fixture that will allow the vibrations in timing belts to be measured experimentally. To test varying sizes of timing belts, the fixture needed to be able to accommodate different pullets [sic] and varying center distances between pulleys. The fixture is designed to test belts with widths ranging from one to two inches, center distances between 21 and 25 inches, and tensions of up to 500 pounds. Components of the fixture include a cam and follower to provide vibrational excitation, a Yaskawa SGMS series 2kW motor and 4096 CPR absolute optical encoders. The fixture is supported by the Gillette Company, and is designed specifically for graduate research.
