A Microstructural analysis of dissimilar creep behavior in Waspaloy

Public

Microstructural analysis of Waspaloy samples taken from the same region of two forgings from the same ingot, with similar processing history but very different creep properties, were performed using optical and scanning electron microscopes to compare their grain size, discrete grain boundary carbides, and ' precipitate dispersed throughout the matrix. The premature creep failure of sample 1528 was attributed to areas of fine grains of ASTM grain size 9-10 and lower volume fraction of fine ' precipitate. Both samples were manufactured under specification with a solution temperature of 1855 +/- 15 ?F, differences can be related to a higher ' solvus temperature for sample 1528 of 1889.8 ?F then for sample 1695, which was 1880 ?F.
