OIL QUENCHING OF OXIDIZED AND UNOXIDIZED 4140 CHTE STEEL PROBES WITH VARYING STARTING TEMPERATURES

The effects of starting temperatures of the heat transfer coefficients of oxidized and unoxidized 4140 steel probes have been experimentally determined for starting temperatures between 400 and 900 degrees Celsius. Each starting temperature was tested five times using standard 8A quenching oil. Results revealed that the maximum heat transfer coefficient increased as the starting temperature increased for both oxidized and unoxidized probes. Results also revealed the maximum heat transfer coefficients for oxidized probes are greater than unoxidized probes.
