The Aspect of axiomatic design and its application to the rapid manufacturing of powered shear tools

Public

The need in engineering to reduce time to manufacture is a large component in product realization. To meet this need many tools and processes have been adopted, among these are rapid prototyping and axiomatic design. Rapid prototyping consists of many different techniques by which a model can be produced in a short period of time. Axiomatic design is described as an interplay between the needs of the customer and the product design. This project uses these tools to develop safety devices for pneumatically powered shears manufactured by Simonds Company. Simonds wishes to expand its market-share in Europe, which requires compliance with the European standard, specifically the aspects addressing safety. By taking the customer's need supplied by Simonds, this Major Qualifying Project consists of applying axiomatic design, to formulate a solution, and stereolithography, to rapidly produce test models.
