Differences in the gene expression of osteopetrotic toothless (tl) rats, colony stimulating factor 1 (CSF-1) treated tl rats, and their normal littermates as determined by differential display

The molecular basis for the disease osteopetrosis and its relationship to commonly known diseases of the skeleton like osteoporosis is presented. It is known that colony stimulating factor-1 (CSF-1) can improve osteoclast function and increase their numbers in the tl (toothless) rat model. The technique of differential display was described and used to identify several genes including collagen I (2) which is overexpressed in the mutant tl rat, but not in its CSF-1 treated or normal littermate.
