Formula SAE aerodynamic system design

Public

An aerodynamic system was designed to improve the performance of the 2002 Formula SAE Racecar. A multiple wing arrangement combined with an underbody diffuser was used to generate maximum low-speed downforce within FSAE rules and vehicle constraints. Airfoils were selected based on lift to drag ratio and maximum lift characteristics. The Selig 1223 airfoil was chosen for all wing elements. The aerodynamic system is predicted to generate approximately 40 pounds of downforce and less than one pound of drag at 16 mph.
