Two Degree of Freedom Powered Arm Orthosis to Augment Arm Function in Persons with Disabilities

A wearable, electromechanically powered arm orthosis for disabled users was designed, manufactured, and evaluated. The device incorporated two degrees of freedom (elbow flexion and humeral rotation), controlled independently or simultaneously by joystick. The lightweight design allows users to lift their own arms plus an additional three pounds in order to independently complete tasks of self care and feeding at a rate 70% longer than an able bodied person. Users responded positively to the intuitive controls and natural arm motion.
