CFD modeling of post-flashover compartment fires

The goal of this project was to develop a method of modeling post-flashover fires, and to identify the limitations of the current models for rooms with unusual geometries. Two computer modeling software packages were used: CFX-TASCflow and Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). These models employ computational fluid dynamics to simulate fluid movement and can be used to model combustion and flame spread. This project simulated a fire in a small (1.5m x 0.6m x 0.3m) single vent compartment. In order to validate the computer models, experimental data was obtained through full-scale testing of the compartment. The simulated and real tests were run with several different vent configurations. Comparisons were made between temperatures and mass loss rates throughout the duration of the fires.
