Chaos in the atmosphere

This project tested the conjecture linking turbulence strength, as quantified by the index of refraction, to the Lyapunov Exponents of the time series representing this turbulence. To test this hypothesis, we used three time series of atmospheric measurements in the upper troposphere. Our results confirmed this hypothesis and established a qualitative link between the index of refraction and the Lyapunov Exponents. To accomplish these objectives, we used phase space reconstruction techniques and three different algorithms to estimate the Lyapunov Exponents.
