Study of flame retardant tendencies of polymers with additives

New fire retardant (FR) polymer additives are constantly investigated in the hope to help lower the risk and severity of fire. Two common polymer classes; epoxy and vinyl ester, combined with two different additives; nanoclay composites and the novel FX polymer, were investigated. Cone calorimetry and tensile testing provided a basis for the comparison of the effectiveness of each additive. The nanoclay additive proved minimally effective while the FX additive helped add to the flame retardant properties of the polymer.
