Sulfuric acid -- water nucleation in a supersonic nozzle

This project investigated the homogenous nucleation of sulfuric acid and water in a supersonic nozzle. To investigate the phenomenon, a supersonic nozzle apparatus was designed, purchased, assembled, and tested. After the successful construction of the apparatus, no difference was found in the location of the onset of condensation in the nozzle for equivalent flowrates of water and 5 x 10 M HSO. Because of the rapidly changing conditions in the nozzle, this result suggests that the steady rate predicted by binary nucleation theory is never reached in the supersonic nozzle. Alternatively, not all of the 5 x 10 M HSO was properly vaporized.
