Formula SAE Hybrid Competition is an annual design and engineering collegiate challenge. The goal of this year’s FSAE team was to design, build, and compete with a formula-style electric, open-wheel race car. This project brought together an interdisciplinary team of 21 students from ME, ECE, RBE, and CS. Despite the constraints, which included: competition rules, finances and time required to complete the race car, our team members conceived and manufactured several components: drivetrain, suspension, custom battery, tractive system components, charger, and braking to satisfy design requirements and structural FEA. Additionally, various circuits were designed and built to meet the rules, including shutdown, pre-charge and discharge, brake system plausibility, tractive system active light, and additional printed circuit boards for optimization and testing. We worked on the integration of the mechanical systems with the electrical systems to obtain a fully operational race car.
