Bacteria in desert soils

Public

Soil samples from surface to 15 cm, 15 cm to 30 cm, and 30 cm to 45 cm were obtained from the open desert in Yuma, AZ. Bacterial extraction was achieved using a Waring blender. One gram of soil was mixed with 100 mL of sterile dH0. Extractions from each sample end were produced. Aliquots of 10 [mu]L were then plated onto R2A and incubated at 27?C. Colonies were counted daily. CFUs (colony forming units) for each depth were compared as well as colony morphology.
