This project examined the effects of the birth of a western lowland gorilla baby on captive group members. Each group member's behavior was assessed prior to [the] birth as baseline behavior, then again following the birth. Data gathered were analyzed in such a manner to observe changes in behavior at group and individual levels. Significant changes occurred following the infant introduction including increased rest, decreased foraging, and exhibit location changes. Also noted were changes in aggression, play and distance to nearest neighbor.
