Characterizing diabetic complications in a virally-induced rat model

Public

This Major Qualifying Project (MQP) addresses an important step in the development of a cure for diabetes: the characterization of an animal model used to study the disease. By applying principles of engineering design, we chose an animal model, a diabetes induction method, and some of the most relevant complications for validating this diabetic animal model. We also designed and implemented the tests used to critically analyze the diabetic complications throughout the course of the disease. These developed protocols are currently being used to characterize a Poly I:C-induced rat model to type 1 diabetes.
