Children's toys and art : an investigation of the relationship between children's playthings and the history of art and industrial design

Public

Children's toys have traditionally been defined by their functions, that is, what they do for children. Toys are playthings, or educational items, or tools for socialization. Yet this definition fails to take into account the visual properties of a toy. Toy design has been impacted by historical events, artists, and art movements since the late 18th century that contributed to social reform regarding children's roles in society and the relationship of art to technology.
