Developing a Makerspace and STEAM Initiative in Santa Fe B22

Public Deposited

Underserved students in rural communities have minimal access and emphasis on STEAM education. The goal of our project was to help change this for Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) students by designing a makerspace that will unify individual efforts by SFIS staff to increase accessibility to hands-on STEAM education. We interviewed makerspace and Santa Fe Indian School employees to help us understand what considerations need to be made when designing a makerspace for the school. Through our research in Santa Fe, New Mexico we learned what makes a successful makerspace and what employees of the school want. We created a guide for the school that contains recommendations based on our findings and other information they may find relevant when creating an on-campus makerspace.
